Purpose decides relevance
A map for walking, a weather map, and a political map represent the same place differently because they answer different questions. There is no single perfect model.
Model the decision
Think aloud as you cross out details, group similar features, and rename them at a useful level. Ask pupils to justify every inclusion rather than merely produce a neat diagram.
Revisit omissions
After using a model, ask what it failed to show. This builds intellectual humility and prepares pupils to question simplified AI outputs.
Three maps, one place
- Assign groups a different purpose: safety, accessibility, or tourism.
- Groups draw a map containing only information needed for that purpose.
- Swap maps and infer each map’s purpose.
- Discuss what each model includes, excludes, and risks hiding.
Model a classroom rather than a neighbourhood.
Add a fourth audience and evaluate potential bias in the representation.
